From Shoulder to Hand: A Workshop in Balance

January 19, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$39

You know that twinge that sometimes occurs when you take weight on the hands.  Perhaps it’s in the wrist, elbow, or even the shoulder. Remember when that arm balance, or even downward facing dog, was easily accessible?  Although certainly not necessary for a satisfying yoga practice, perhaps you want to experience that asana again or for the first time. Now you can apply your own unique anatomy of muscle, fascia, and bone structure to keep your practice healthy, strong, and pain-free.

WE WILL LEARN:

  • The necessity of proper shoulder positioning in relation to the arm and hand

  • How to set the foundation for your unique body

  • How to know your are in correct alignment

  • How to re-pattern that alignment neurologically and energetically (build safe new habits)

  • Gradual muscle and fascia conditioning to maintain alignment (developing strength safely)

  • How to use props to slowly and safely “build” arm balance poses

OUR PRACTICE WILL INCLUDE:

  • Shoulder practice sequences for myofascial strength and improved range of motion

  • Sequences to safely strengthen the actual joint itself (bones, ligaments, etc.)

  • Understanding shoulder anatomy, a visual and kinesthetic experience for shoulder safety

  • Measuring our arms and hands for optimal alignment

  • Using the breath to sense an arm/hand balance asana (seat in the pose)

THIS ALL LEVELS WORKSHOP WILL CONSIDER SOME COMMON HAND AND ARM BALANCES AND HOW TO MAKE THEM ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL.  THEY ARE FUN, GRATIFYING AND SAFE WITH PROPER ALIGNMENT, POSITIONING, AND AWARENESS.

Downward Facing Dog,  Caturanga Dandasana, Side Plank,  the Wild Thing transition

We may explore arm balances if there is interest (Crow and Side Crow,  the Koundinyasana series, Eight-Angle Arm Balance, etc.)

JOHN teaches Hatha Yin and Hatha at Warrior II Yoga, focusing on alignment, posture, and safety in movement.  He believes that the more a practitioner knows about the physical and energetic body, then the more connected that yogi becomes to the self and the universe at large.
