Full Moon Community Kirtan
October 12, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Kirtan (public devotional singing or chanting) is a form of Bhakti Yoga – union thru devotion. Traditionally, kirtan is sung in call-and-response form. A leader sings a line or two of a song, and the participants sing it back. Although kirtan involves singing or chanting, it is not necessary to have any musical talent or background, or even a good singing voice. Kirtan is the music of the heart, an offering to your divine self.
When you are chanting, you will be working your breath, you will be “watching” the mind, and working with your attention. As thoughts begin to enter your mind, bring your attention to the chant, and allow the thought to flow out of your body. Continue this process throughout the duration of the chant. Be conscious of offering your distractions into the chant. With the practice of kirtan, you are trying to releases the mind from it’s usual associative patterns, which keep us caught in the cycles of pleasure and pain that come with the ups and downs of everyday life.
“The goal of Bhakti Yoga is to build a fire of love and let that fire burn away everything which is holding us back. In this view, chanting
is like playing with matches…“ — Tony Godwin
